Immediately following his arrival in Paris, Van Gogh painted a large number of still lifes. He regarded these works as studies in color, paintings in which he could experiment freely with contrasting colors, such as blue and orange, yellow and purple, or – as here – red and green. As he wrote to an English friend, his aim was to achieve –intense coloration, not gray harmony
